How to send us a suspicious message safely
Never click a link to find out if it is genuine. Scammers hide dangerous links behind ordinary-looking words, buttons and images, in messages pretending to come from trusted organisations. Do not open attachments, call numbers in the message, reply, or give passwords, codes or bank details until you have checked the request yourself.
Copy and paste. Avoid tapping links or buttons while you select. Press and hold, choose Select all, then Copy, and paste it in the box. Tap the sender's name to show the full address behind it: the name alone can say anything.
Or a screenshot. If copying might make you tap a link, take a screenshot instead. For a long message take more, in order, and upload them all. You check the words we read before the scan.
Most accurate for an email: the original. On a computer, Gmail: the three dots, then “Show original”. Outlook: the three dots, then View, then “View message source”. Apple Mail: View, Message, Raw Source. Paste it under “Add more details”.
Check a phone number
Got a call or text from a number? See what the official UK numbering records say about it. Do not call it back.
